Over course of the years I’ve started picking up photography as a hobby, I’ve always struggled between image quality and portability. Since the age of film, I was constantly looking for something light weight, well built, superior optic resolution, friendly user interface cameras and lenses. After trying out many options (Leica, Contax, Carl Zeiss, Canon, Nikon, Pentax..etc..) I finally settled with Pentax system. I am sure there are many better systems out there, but I am not a professional, and I don’t expect my work would somehow compensate my investment, so the cost is also one other factor I look into. I am sure opinions are always based on biased perspectives. But I will try to be agnostic as possible though.
Back in the age of film, the larger film you are putting into the camera, with proper “sharp” lenses, you will have higher resolution of an image. Surely enough, there are many medium format and large format cameras through out the history, but only down side to that : they aren’t very portable. I admire people who has superman strength that carries 4×5 large format camera with large tripod climbing the mountains to capture a glaze of a sun raise or some out standing natural scenes. Needless to say, as an engineer who sits in front of the computer day in and day out, my physical isn’t any better than a grandpa who works on the field. so first thing out of the door, is the medium / large format cameras. Due to the short coming of “PORTABILITY“.
